A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1.Back to School AT School! Ladies and gentlemen…my boys are back to school IN their school building (cue the slow clap). I know. I know. This is HUGE. I feel like I have so many people to thank. A big shout out to our school for having the courage to open it’s doors to parents that feel just fine and dandy about sending their kids to school with professional (they went to college and stuff for this) teachers. I’m also VERY grateful to the all the teachers for–once again–pulling off a magic trick of not only being willing to show up in person, but carrying on e-learning as well. If they don’t all go twitchy eyed with complete mental breakdowns at the end of all this–it’ll be a miracle. And lastly, I want to applaud the kids. By the time we have kids, most of us grownups have learned that life is unpredictable and have learned to just go with it (plus we have extra helpers like alcohol and curse words). But, for kids–this has been really tough. My boys have handled themselves really well through it all. I don’t think I realized how much it was affecting them until the day I got to announce that they were going back for in person learning–they whooped and hollered like they had won the Super Bowl.
2. Science Projects. I love, love, LOVE our school’s new science teacher. For the past few years we’ve had some rather dull, dreary–just read from the textbook and take quizzes type teachers. This year we have a guy who is not only exciting to listen to–he LOVES to have the kids do hands on, see how it works projects. Morgan got to build a Newton’s Cradle and Grayson got to make a model of the earth’s core.
3. A Gig at a NEW place. Ever since COVID-19 hit–SofaKillers have had slim pickins on places to play in town. This past week–they were asked to play at a newish place in town called Viewhouse. Oh Wow! This place is SO cool. It’s a restaurant/bar with a huge outdoor seating area. The guys played outside because of all the virus restrictions and thankfully our Colorado weather cooperated with a beautiful evening.
One thing we all are learning about the restrictions is that there is absolutely NO consistency on what is allowed and what isn’t. And–depending on where you go–there are more inconsistencies within various businesses. At most places that are playing live music, they don’t allow dancing on the dancefloor. It’s a bummer, but at least folks can still dance as long as they stay at their table. But for some reason, Viewhouse wouldn’t even allow that. Even though we were outside (which is supposed to be safer) where the table’s were spaced WAY far apart–they strongly believed it was unsafe for us to stand up and shake our booties. Normally, this probably wouldn’t be a big deal, but, SofaKillers fans come to dance.
The crowd just couldn’t help themselves–folks kept getting up to dance(how can you not with disco/funk/rock/pop/country playing?) One of the waiters decided it was his job to be the stern task master and kept coming around yelling at people to sit down (many compared him to the principal in Ferris Buellers Day Off). SofaKillers fans are also a rowdy bunch and unfortunately things got a bit out of hand–they were almost purposefully trying to stir him up (getting up to dance when he had his back turned). The band tried in vain to get everyone to behave–but I think everyone has reached their limit of being told what they can and cannot do(plus they had A LOT of liquid encouragement pumping through their veins). Long story short–the manager told the guys they wouldn’t be invited back until COVID-19 restrictions are over. He was highly complimentary of the band and how good he thinks they are–and he was also appreciative of how they tried to handle the rowdiness. But at the end of the day–he has to protect their ability to keep the place open. One outbreak and they can be shut down for at least two weeks. Ah well. It made for a very funny night–kind of like watching a bunch of kids misbehaving. I was surprised that poor waiter didn’t have a “kick me” sign taped to his back.
4.FOOTBALL! NFL season has started–Halleluiah! I just LOVE the sound and excitement of football. Also, my boys got to start their flag football season. The team they played this week is a tackle football team that has been together for years. They had to switch to flag football at the last minute if they wanted to play at all. Our six players– who only met each other and their coach just an hour before the game –did pretty good against such an experienced team. It kind of felt like a scene out of Karate Kid–our players against Cobra Kai. Thankfully none of their players did a ‘sweep the leg’.
5.My favorite memes of the week.
As always, I would love to hear from you. I hope you have a great week!
