A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1. Barney’s Decorating Tips. I always place baskets of poinsettias on either side of our front door at Christmastime. I noticed that for several days in a row, one was pushed all the way under our nearby piano. At first, I blamed our boys roughhousing, but it was odd that it was always the same basket moved. That’s when I realized that the culprit was Barney. His decorating style follows the great Frank Lloyd Wright–that form should follow function. Apparently, my decorating–just for looks–was blocking his view out the front. I see your point, Barney–but, to me it’s a little off balance. We’ll have to just agree to disagree.
2. Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve has become all about distracting our boys, so they don’t drive us crazy while they wait in excited anticipation for Christmas. Thankfully, The Summit Interquest was open, and our boys had a blast bowling, playing video games and a couple rounds of laser tag.
But, by far, our favorite activity on Christmas Eve is leading worship at Calvary Fellowship Monument. We have known these folks for years and I’m tickled to death that they invite us back each year to share in their candle-light service.
As an extra bonus–we got a dusting of snow on Christmas Eve. I think that counts as a white Christmas, don’t you?
3. Christmas Day. It always begins early. It is always complete chaos. And it is always an absolute blast. I had long forgotten how exciting Christmas can be until we had kids. I have always loved getting and giving gifts–who doesn’t? But, to see my boys just aching with excited anticipation, shriek as they open each gift and revel in all the joy of it all–well, there’s just nothing like it. It was a great day.
My favorite is always sitting back with Super Rockstar and watching our boys enjoy their gifts and then quietly giving each other special cards, gifts and treats. He knows how to speak all my love languages: some nesting doll Santa’s–this was my favorite,
some new books–these were my absolute favorite (anyone who has ever watched and loved the show Castle will appreciate the significance of these books),
an antique saddle/tack holder–ok this was my favorite favorite ,
some turquoise earrings and ring–obviously my favorite, FAVORITE, favorite,
and some new fishing waders–can this guy be any more perfect?
My boys gave me some sweet gifts too–a coaster and a pretty necklace–and cards I LOVE. I am a VERY blessed Momma.
4. Kansas Christmas. Our tradition since our boys have been born is to have Christmas day in our own home and then travel to my parent’s house in Kansas the day after to celebrate with them and usually a quick visit with my sister and her husband Todd (and occasionally some of their now grown kids). It was a great visit and as a bonus we got to see my Uncle Larry and Aunt Veta who were passing through. My parents know how to spoil us all rotten with great gifts, amazing food and we just enjoy being in the comfort of their beautiful home.
5. Happy New Year! Super Rockstar’s band SofaKillers played a sold-out show at Boot Barn Hall this year for New Year’s Eve. I was supposed to go, but unfortunately, he and I came down with the crud shortly after our return from Kansas. He soldiered on and they put on a great show, but I was stuck at home. I did sneak over to give my man a New Year smooch at midnight and take a few photos, but my evening mostly was spent in jammies, under a blanket moaning and groaning while our boys’ watched movies. Not quite the way I was hoping to start this new year, but oh well.
6. What We Watched. We got to see the new Spider-Man and enjoyed many Christmas favorites. Just click the link to read our reviews.
