A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1.Hunter Training. It was Grayson’s turn to take the hunter training course that Super Rockstar and Morgan did last year, so I decided to take it with him (They offer it at Scheels and various other places around the state–just visit Colorado Parks & Wildlife – Hunter Education (state.co.us) to learn more). I’ll be honest– I had been sort of dreading it. It’s a lot of time commitment–four hours on a Friday night and 8 hours on Saturday. And at the end there’s a 50-question test that you have to get 100% on. Yikes. But, from the very beginning, the instructors made it clear that passing the test would be easy. First of all, they allow notes, second, they tell you important facts to write down, and thirdly even if you miss a couple, they’ll allow you to go back and try again. There’s a lot of information given in a short amount of time and the goal is to make sure you know the basics–especially the safety aspects.
I really enjoyed it too. Each session was only about 30-40 minutes with breaks in between and we learned a lot of interesting things. I had no idea that the sport of hunting was so closely guarded and protected–including the environments and populations of the animals. There was also a huge portion on firearm safety–including a test at the firing range to ensure we all knew how to properly handle, load, and fire a 22 rifle. I was grateful that it was NOT a test of my ability to hit a target. Grayson did great. Me…not so much.
Grayson will be going on his first hunt this fall — similar to a trip that Super Rockstar and Morgan went on last year (you can read about that here). I’m not sure when I will go, but I feel so proud of Grayson and I for doing this. We are now a whole family of licensed hunters.
2. The Best of: Wow oh wow! SofaKillers did it again. This is the 4th time in 5 years that they have won Best Local Band in Colorado Springs. Congratulations to them! I know I’m biased–but man–they earned this. And then to put a little cherry on top–Super Rockstar was nominated and won Silver for Best Local Musician in Colorado Springs. Woop Woop! I’m so proud of him!
3.A Second flight. Morgan got to go on his second orientation flight with Civil Air Patrol. He absolutely LOVES it. I’m amazed at how at home he is in the plane, and he tells me that controlling the aircraft feels completely comfortable to him. This is from the boy who is in no hurry to learn how to drive a car (he just turned 16), but flying a plane? No sweat.
