A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1. Dart Wars. Going to this place is always on the boys summer bucket list. We found out they opened a new location on the north side of town, and it is fantastic. Both Morgan and Grayson said the games seemed more organized and they have a better sound system– so the DJ calling games doesn’t sound like he’s shouting into a metal barrel. I loved it because they really thought of spectators for this location–there are huge windows with bar seating so you can watch the battles or bring a laptop and get some stuff done while pretending to watch. And they have an upper level with a great overview of the arena. As with the other location–they were very generous with the time (we paid for an hour and the boys got to play for an hour and a half) and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
2. Wolf Ranch Gig. This is where it all started for SofaKillers–14 years ago. I love neighborhood summer concert series and this one is by far my favorite.
3. Camping Trip #2. We have found a place that we love going every year outside of Lake City, CO. It’s a bit of a drive (around 5 hours), but this part of Colorado is breathtakingly beautiful. We had a bit of an adventure on the drive there. Just outside of Woodland Park, we noticed a driver coming up on us with his lights flashing and gesturing to us. We pulled over to discover one of the tires on our camper had blown completely. We had no idea. Thankfully, Super Rockstar was able to change it and get us back on our way.
Our favorite campsite has two lakes to fish–basically right out the front door of our camper, but we opted to drive to the nearby river this year. Both Morgan and Grayson are becoming more interested in fly fishing–and especially love wearing the waders and boots. They had a great time casting fishing lines, tromping around in the water, throwing rocks and just goofing around. Morgan caught his first fish using a fly rod right away and spent the rest of our time trying to repeat the experience. He unfortunately learned that his early luck wasn’t the norm. Grayson and I tried spin casting and got several bites, but river fish are smart and seem to have a supernatural ability to take a hook out of their own mouths. Super Rockstar won the prize for most fish caught–4 total over the two days we spent on the river. You could not wipe the smile off his face.
There is also a beautiful lake nearby where we got to go kayaking. Oh my–we are addicted to this now. To be out in the beauty on the water is the most peaceful experience. Just for a kick, we tried spin cast fishing while on our kayaks and I caught one. I couldn’t believe it–I didn’t even have a net, so I had to just lob the poor guy into my boat and then balance myself while I put him back.
The best part for me was just being in our beautiful Colorado mountains away from all the noise of life–time just seems to suspend itself. We stayed up late watching movies, enjoyed campfires and making s’mores and sleeping in.
4. Super Rockstar’s Birthday. We got to celebrate Super Rockstar’s birthday while out camping. We gave him one of his gifts–a new kayak–early because it’s hard to hide a kayak in the truck. He loved it. On his actual birthday, we decorated the campsite with streamers and balloons, he did his traditional scavenger hunt for his birthday box (thanks to Morgan bringing his deer blind–we had the perfect spot to hide it) and made do with some hostess cupcakes for a birthday cake (the one I made went swimming in the cooler and got a little soggy). He got to do his favorite things–fishing and kayaking and had a great day.
5. A Double Outdoor Gig Weekend–with unbelievable crowds. We got back from our camping adventure just in time for two back-to-back gigs for SofaKillers.
First, they played an outdoor summer concert at The Promenade Shops at Briargate. This was their first time playing here and it went great.
The next night they got to have their re-do at Red Leg Brewing Company. This was supposed to be earlier in the summer but got cancelled due to the rain. When I drove up just 30 minutes before they started, I couldn’t believe how crowded it was–cars packed in every nook and cranny of the parking lot and mostly filling up a dirt lot close by. It was unbelievable. Red Leg is a unique place. They are a brewery but not a restaurant. However, permanent “food trucks” are scattered throughout their enormous outdoor property–housed in shipping crates. It is really cool There are lawns and sidewalks throughout where folks can bring their own chairs and sit and enjoy the music. I don’t think there was a square inch to spare. The guys put on a great show, and it was a crazy fun night.
