A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1.Drive up Pikes Peak. Every once in a while, we decide to play “tourist” in our hometown. Super Rockstar and the boys had not been to see the new Summit Visitor Center at the top and since I kept raving about how cool it is (my mom and I saw it last fall), we put it on our summer bucket list. The drive to the top of Pikes Peak is gorgeous and it’s a relatively inexpensive day of entertainment –costing no more than $50.00 per car. You can take your time, pull over and take photos, hike or just head straight up to the top. The visitor center has a cafe that sells the famous not-so-great-donuts that everyone must try (and many other things too), a nice little museum of history, and a gift shop. There are also some wonderful paths all around the top to see the breath-taking views and catch a glimpse of the cog rail train arriving or even some hikers that braved their way to the top. The drive can be a little precarious at times–with hairpin turns and straight drop offs–but it’s well worth it. We had a great time.
2.Our last summer adventure. For our last summer hurrah, we headed up to Denver to stay at a hotel. We really love the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Englewood. They have a great pool and hot tub, there’s complimentary breakfast (and free coffee all day), their suites are really nice with small kitchens and nice big bedrooms–the boys even got their own room, and we all just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. We also visited the Denver Zoo and loved getting to see a lot of the animals. Before heading home, we stopped at a fantastic antique mall called The Brass Armadillo. It’s enormous and we spent several hours looking at all the treasures and even brought a couple things home. It’s hard to believe our summer break has come to an end, but this was a wonderful ending to a wonderful summer.
3.Boot Barn Hall Gig with a great cause. SofaKillers has played this fundraiser event for Homefront Military Network for the past few years. It’s such a great cause as they provide support and resources military service members, veterans and their families. It was a great night of fun and dancing AND they raised funds well over their goal.
4. And so it begins. School started and our summer break is officially over. Grayson is a freshman this year and had a full day of orientation the day before the official start. Neither one of them was very excited to start back to school –with the much earlier wake ups and having to deal with homework. But so far, it’s going pretty well.
