Coffee Break–Volume 201

Posted on December 11, 2025 by Jennifer Glenn

October was another busy month–there were football games, homecoming for Grayson, a visit from my parents, a gig for Super Rockstar and of course Halloween. It flew by, but it sure was a lot of fun.

1. The Coop Gig. Playing a gig at The Coop is always a favorite for Super Rockstar-it’s a low-key, comfortable environment where he can play, sing, and interact with the audience. It was a fun evening for all of us. PLUS, he sang a new song that he had written for me–that I had no idea about. It was a great surprise!

2. Homecoming Fun. Grayson participated fully in all the Homecoming activities this year: Super Rockstar and I went with him to watch the Powder Puff game, he had fun doing most of the dress up spirit days, he got to be in the parade along with his football teammates, played in the homecoming football game, and he went to the dance in his fancy duds. He had so much fun and we had fun watching him have fun.

3. Visit from my parents. My parents got to come visit during Grayson’s homecoming weekend. It was so great to have them here–we enjoyed lots of hanging out and eating good food.

4. Choir Concert. Grayson tried something new in his electives this year–choir. They had their first concert and he sang with his group of seven other guys called The Thorzmen. I loved when they sang Carry On Wayward Son. There were several performances of the various choir groups and there was big finish at the end with all groups singing together. It was a delightful evening.

5. A Goal Achieved. I think this month should be called “the month of Grayson”. It seemed like everything revolved around his activities–including a lot of football games. At the beginning of the football season, he had one goal: to letter as a junior. To do so, he needed to play 20 quarters in varsity games. I’m so proud of him–he met with his coach at the beginning of the season and told him his goal. The coach made no promises but told him there was a path if he would be willing to play whatever positions were needed. Grayson told him just wanted to be on the field playing. Every game after that, he got to be on kickoff return and sometimes kick off and punting plays. And at the second to last regular season game in October, he achieved his goal. I’m sure some of the other spectators must have been so confused as to why Super Rockstar and I were on our feet cheering as Grayson came off the field after an unremarkable kickoff to the other team. But that was his 20th quarter of play that earned him his letter. His smile was huge, and we all loved celebrating with him that night.

6. All the Halloween. We enjoyed all of our usual traditions for Halloween–buying pumpkins at Smith Market, carving pumpkins and watching Nightmare Before Christmas and decorating jack-o-lantern sugar cookies. I almost forgot about the cookies, but Grayson reminded me (he never forgets ANY of our traditions) and we were able to squeeze it in on pumpkin carving night. Doesn’t Super Rockstar look thrilled with this last-minute change in our plans?

When my boys were young, we started shopping for costumes and making plans for Halloween in late August/early September. We still do. Both boys decided to be different versions of The Joker this year–Morgan: the Jared Letto one from Suicide Squad and Grayson: The Heath Ledger version from Batman: The Dark Knight. Super Rockstar did their makeup, and they both looked fantastic. The boys came home with a huge haul of candy and then we all went a few blocks over to a really fun house that goes all out with a haunted walk through their back yard. Super Rockstar and I both received our “candy tax” of Reece’s peanut butter cups for me and kit kat and Twix for him.

7. Movies and Shows–Episode 105. Just click the link to read about all we watched in October.

8. Books I read. I started, but did not finish the next in the Sue Grafton series–K is for Killer. And, yes, I’m still reading the Trim Healthy Wisdom book. I will probably STILL be trying to make my way through it this time next year.

9. My Favorite Memes.

As always, I would love to hear from you.
