A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1.Two gigs in one day?! It can’t be done! But, they did it. Super Rockstar’s band, SofaKillers ,pulled off two very successful gigs in one day. The first one was a neighborhood fall festival. My boys LOVED going since it had all sorts of fun things to do–climbing walls, trampolines, face painting, balloon animals, all sorts of small games to earn little prizes like candy and bubbles, and they also had a pumpkin patch. Oh yeah…Daddy’s band played too.
The second one was a house party they have played for 4 years now hosted by some friends that are big time SofaKiller supporters. Hal and Lori put on a GREAT costume party every year. This year’s theme was a TV or movie character and the costumes were AMAZING! Super Rockstar dressed up as Mr. Rogers and he looked every bit the part. It was so fun to watch Mr. Rogers singing rock, pop, country, disco and funk–just slightly different than watching the old TV show.
2. Let’s talk trash. Last week (Coffee Break–Volume 28) I told you about how we dismantled the pirate ship Super Rockstar built 4 years ago. We had a huge pile of old wood that we needed to dispose of. I found out we have a trash transfer station only about 10 miles from our house. Bestway Disposal is one of our local city trash services and their transfer station is really easy to use. I was a bit intimated the first time, but they have a really great system that makes it easy for anyone wanting to dispose of large loads of trash and debris.
Upon entering, they have signage that directs you to a building with large drive on scales on each side.
You drive onto the one on the right and there’s a worker in the window who gives you the signal when they have the weight of your vehicle.
Then, you pull forward to a stop sign.
There is a huge building with lots of garage size openings up ahead.
One of the workers wearing an orange vest will wave you over as soon as they have a slot open and direct you exactly where to back your truck or trailer in.
Then, you just scoot, lift, pile, throw, and toss your junk out. The workers there often will help if they aren’t occupied with someone else.
As soon as you are done, you just pull forward and drive back to the building with the scale. Only this time you go to the scale on the opposite side.
They weigh you again and then you walk over to the window to pay. It’s $20 for up to 160 pounds and then 12 cents a pound over that. I was truly impressed by how helpful the staff was and how quick it was to get in and out of there–which is good, because trash is REALLY stinky.
3. A last walk down a familiar path. Our boys have gone to the same charter school since kindergarten. Last year at the end of the school year our board decided it was time to break away from the current charter and form a new one due to some problems we were having with the company. With the new charter, our school district gave us a new name and a brand new building, however, the construction wasn’t quite finished in time for the beginning of this school year and we would have to wait until after fall break to move to the new building.
Wednesday was the boys last day of school before fall break and as I walked the familiar path to pick them up–I realized it would be the last time I would ever do so. I have to admit, I got a bit emotional about it. We live so close and have often walked or ridden bikes or scooters school.
The new school is further away so we won’t get to do that any more. I love that their new school is so much bigger and has a lot more of what they need. But, I have never been good with change–and this is a big one.
4. Our first snow. I live in Colorado so it’s a rule (a state law or something) that we have to tell the world when we get our first snow. We also MUST tell you how warm it was the day before so that you can be properly astounded by how quickly the temperatures can change around here. It was 75 degrees and sunny on Monday. Our high on Tuesday was 27 AND we got our first snow. I’ve now done my Colorado civic duty. You’ll hear from me again when we get our first blizzard–complete with video so you can witness the snow encrusted windows and hear the high winds that rattle our home.
5. Daddy’s home. Super Rockstar had to travel to Honduras for a few days this past week. It’s never fun when he is away–our home just feels empty. The boys and I always struggle a bit to fill the time while he’s away. Our dog Barney seems pretty indifferent to Super Rockstar most days. He has been “my” dog since day one. He follows me everywhere, looks at me adoringly and is my constant companion.
But, while Super Rockstar was away, Barney just couldn’t seem to settle down and do his normal 20 hours of sleep per day. He kept wanting to look around the house, go outside at odd times and was just acting weird. I finally figured out that he was looking for Super Rockstar. When he got home, Barney was the first one out the door to greet him and has been shameless in wanting to show is adoration and devotion to him. Looks like I just got bumped from being his favorite human. Sigh.
I hope you have a great week!
