A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1. It’s Fall! There are not enough words to describe how giddy with joy I feel. Fall is ALWAYS my favorite season–there’s the cooler weather (thank You Lord!), football games, gorgeous colors with the leaves changing, and– I know for some of you–pumpkin spice flavored things (you’re on your own there). As a special bonus–my favorite hiking/biking trails are thinning out as the gung ho summer hikers are beginning their cooler weather hibernation.
2. A painful surgery. Super Rockstar has been having knee pain for a few years now, but a couple of months ago, he attempted a “rock star jump” that ended up tearing his meniscus and ACL. I’ve been remarkably self controlled–I think–in not saying boo about how he ended up in this predicament. He had his surgery this week and is now at the beginning of a long, long road to recovery. No. more. jumps. (she said through gritted teeth).
3. Saying goodbye to our first camper. We purchased our very first camper a little over 2 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I wrote about our adventures in fixing it up (You can read those here, here, here, here and here) and we’ve had many fun adventures these past two summers. BUT, my two boys continue to grow and grow and GROW. Our little pop-up that was PLENTY big when we bought it, is now A LOT too small. We got to enjoy one last ride over Labor Day weekend and then decided it was time to let her go. A lovely couple bought it this week and I have been assured that it’s going to a good home. Happy Trails little Skamper. We will miss you!
4. Some hard workin boys. Once again my boys have wish lists for toys that FAR exceeds their normal weekly allowance. They have been begging for some sort of chore that would pay a good chunk of money. The only thing I could come up with was to power wash and re-stain our fence. They have been working hard and doing a good job, however, they are a bit like Tom Sawyer when it comes to getting started. At their current rate, I’m anticipating an early spring completion.
5. Movies–4 we liked, 1…not so much. Our weekly movie ventures become more and more of a quest to find good quality, enjoyable, don’t make you regret it–options. This past week we found four that we really enjoyed and one, well….not so much. The ones we enjoyed were:
Onward It is a really great family movie that we all enjoyed. It’s a touching story, a great adventure and really fun characters. Yes, there is a split second nod to a homosexual relationship, but beyond that–it is clean and I think it’s fit for the whole family.
Journey 2 The Mysterious Island is another fun family movie we all enjoyed. It’s got Dwayne Johnson and Michael Caine and is a very fun adventure with lots of cool CGI effects. It’s very clean, but there are a few intense scenes that little ones might be scared of.
Hunter Killer is one Super Rockstar and I really enjoyed. It has Gary Oldman and Gerard Butler and is all about a submarine captain that stumbles onto a coup within Russia to overthrow their leader. It’s pretty intense with some great action and exciting moments. There’s quite a bit of violence and bad language so I don’t recommend this one for kids–maybe it’s ok for older teenagers.
Alita is one we have talked about watching as a family, but could never convince the boys that they would enjoy it. So, Super Rockstar and I watched it without them. It is very good. I remember seeing the previews in the theaters and thinking…meh. I was pleasantly surprised–it has good action and a compelling story. There’s only a few bad words here and there, but there is some graphic violence so I don’t recommend it for younger kids.
And then there was one that was a dud:
Precious Cargo has Bruce Willis in it–so there was an expectation going in that it would be good. It’s not. It’s really not very good at all. It’s about a couple of thieves that are in over their head when a heist goes wrong. There were some good moments here and there, but overall I had the feeling that most of the actors were relatives or friends of the producers of the movie– and that maybe Bruce Willis got wrangled in because he lost a bet or something. Definitely not one for kids and I don’t really recommend it for anyone.
6. My Favorite Memes of the Week.
As always, I would love to hear from you. I hope you have a great week!
