A weekly list of things accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.
1. The truck. While everyone else in our nation was glued to their TV’s anxiously awaiting election results, we were up in Denver buying a new-to-us truck for Super Rockstar. Anyone who knows Super Rockstar knows how much he loved his last truck. I mean–LOVED loved it. But, since our older son, Morgan, grew A LOT this past year (he’s a giant) and his knees were pretty much under his chin for road trips–we knew it was time to find something bigger.
There are few things I despise more than buying cars. Thankfully, Super Rockstar spared me most of the process (although there were many, MANY days of looking at ones he was interested in online). It was a bit of trying to find a needle in a haystack to find the one he wanted at the price we could afford, but he prevailed and on election day he got to drive it home.
It was totally worth the long drive and dealing with overly cheesy sales guys (shudder) to see the smile on his face. I think he’s found his new love.
2. Back on E-Learning. A big shout out to Covid for always coming up with new ways to make me cry this year. My boys have been back for in person learning at their school since mid September and have been so happy. There was one time that my older son had to quarantine for a couple days because someone in his cohort group had symptoms. As soon as the kid got a negative test–they were allowed back. This past week–they had to make the decision to send ALL the middle schoolers home for the week because so many teachers were quarantined for kids in their classes having symptoms, there weren’t enough teachers at the school to teach. Ugh! Okay. Fine. It was just for a few days.
But then…our governor announced that cases in Colorado are on the rise. I will not get into my personal beliefs about what I think needs to happen at this point in regards to this virus. I’m not a scientist, medical professional, or politician. I just know that because of this announcement–our school district has now put all kids back on e-learning through the end of this quarter. My boys aren’t happy about it. I’m not happy about it. Super Rockstar….well, I think he’s pretty much indifferent. Except that because I’m unhappy about it–he now must be unhappy about it. In other words our home is just bursting with joy right now.
3. What we watched. This week we watched a couple of movies we saw long ago. The first one is Ghostbusters. First of all, I don’t recommend it for younger kids. One of my BIG missteps as a parent was allowing our boys to watch it for the first time when they were much younger (7 and 9, I think). I had misjudged how scary the opening scene is as well as forgetting about several inappropriate scenes later in the movie. It’s rated PG–but to be honest it should be PG-13. Morgan wouldn’t go in our basement by himself (where their play room is) for like 6 months. They are now 11 and 13 and we all just loved it.
We also watched Megamind. This used to be one of my boys all time favorites several years ago. I had forgotten how good it is. I think it’s appropriate for all ages. There is some “romantic” scenes where the characters kiss–this always makes my younger son Grayson scream in horror and run from the room. And there is a reference to the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy not being real–so if your little ones still believe–you might want to fast forward through that part. It’s just a great story and very entertaining.
4. Books I read. For self help/inspiration I read the new one from Melanie Shankle called On the Bright Side. If you have never read any of her books–I can’t recommend them highly enough. I have laughed and cried through all of them as she shares her personal anecdotes, inspiration, and just good ole fashioned girly girl perspectives on life.
For my learning book, I read another one on writing which was one called The Writing Life by Annie Dillard. It didn’t really give any nuts and bolts advise on writing, but was more a collection of anecdotes from her every day life as a writer. She is gifted at describing things in a way that you can truly see, feel, smell and touch. I really enjoyed it.
For fiction, I only have a few more Agatha Christi books left (I need to find some more). I loved the two I read this month. The first one was called Death in the Air and the other one was The Halloween Party. Both are Hercule Perot mysteries–which I adore. It was doubly good because I actually finished reading the Halloween one ON Halloween. Bonus. (I have no idea why things like that make me happy. They just do.)
5. My favorite memes of the week. There were so many this week–it was hard to choose…
As always, I would love to hear from you. I hope you have a great week!
