We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1. The King’s Man. This is the 3rd movie in the series but is a prequal to the story. Super Rockstar and I got to sneak away for a date night to go see it in the theater and we really enjoyed it. It’s a really good story and the whole bit and action scene with Rasputin is wonderful. It’s rated R, so not recommended for kids, but adults will find it very entertaining. I really love it because it does a great job of explaining how it all began.
2. The Matrix Resurrections. I’m really stumped how to tell you about this movie. It’s The Matrix. There’s red pills and blue pills. There’s Neo and Trinity and Morpheus. I have to be honest–at one point I fell asleep. Maybe it was because my head hurt from the whole “matrixy” thing going on or maybe I just completely lost interest in the story. Either way–some folks will love it, others (like me) will shrug their shoulders and think “meh”. The new twist on the story is that Neo is now back in his former fake reality (stay with me). He is a game designer that believes that the whole original Matrix story he lived–which was actual reality (almost there–follow the rabbit), but it’s really the machines attempt to keep him from disrupting their plans in controlling and using the human population for their benefits (whew!). Makes perfect sense. Right? It’s rated R–so not for the kiddos (or anyone prone to their brain exploding from a story line that makes you think WAY too much).
3. 1883. Now THIS is a show I am enjoying. It’s the prequal to the Yellowstone series and–so far (we’re on episode 5) it has been really good. It’s all about the original Dutton’s and how they are on a covered wagon journey from Texas to Oregon and beyond–along with two guides and a group of Europeans that are seeking a new life in the land of the free. My only criticism so far is that the narration (done by the daughter) is often a little over the top flowery –“the glistening dew drops quivered as the land came alive with the winnowing wind leading me to dream and hope of a future I had never known before” (Okay, I made that up–but it’s similar to some of the sugary sweet prose she recites). I really like all of the old west drama and–oh my goodness so many folks have died on the journey so far. It’s rated TV-MA–which is basically the same as rated R for movies. In other words–it’s not for kids. At this point, you can only stream the episodes on Paramount Plus. I know. I know. We all need another movie/show streaming app like we need a hole in our heads–but it’s the world we live in now.
4. The Mission Impossible Movies. You should know a little something about Super Rockstar and I–when there is a new season of a show or a new movie in series coming out–we take the time to re-watch all shows/movies leading up to the new one. There is a new Mission Impossible movie coming out later this year–so naturally we have to start at the beginning. I absolutely LOVE these movies. I didn’t realize–but we hadn’t allowed our boys to see the first 3 yet, so they are getting to watch with us. The first one–Mission Impossible–is so great–with Ethan introduced as the super awesome spy/bad guy taker outer. Super Rockstar doesn’t like that they made Jim Phelps a bad guy (in the original TV series he was never a bad guy). There’s so many great action scenes and a good story with lots of twists and turns.
In Mission Impossible II, there are SO many great stunt scenes. My only criticism of this one is that John Woo directs it–so there is a lot of pointless artsy slo-mo (his trademark). I still really like the story and choose to laugh at the scenes that I’m supposed to take seriously–but seem comical to me. These are both rated PG-13 and are mostly clean. There are a few kissing scenes, but no nudity and the bad language is mild. I don’t recommend for young kids (you can read the parent guide here and here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
