We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1.Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is the second Doctor Strange movie in the Marvel series. What I have loved most about all the various Marvel movies–whether it’s Spiderman, Thor, Ironman, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers or whatever–the stories all tie together. There is even a specific order you can watch them so that you can see the entire story unfold (we did this a couple of years ago). In this one, Doctor Strange has cast a forbidden spell that opens up the doorway to the multiverse–and now he is encountering different versions of himself and the threat becomes greater than he can handle. The larger story is that he discovers Wanda has become a dark version of herself (the Scarlet Witch) in which she is trying to take over a multiverse version of herself where she can be with her children that don’t exist in her current reality. Confusing? Oh yes. Everything having to do with the multiverse takes all forces of concentration that one can muster to follow along.
That being said–the overall story is very good. THAT being said–it is the most dark and sinister of all the Marvel movies in my opinion. There is an element of witchcraft and dark arts (even some demons) that make it seem almost horror movie-ish at times. There’s also a zombie version of Doctor Strange at one point. It’s rated PG-13, but I would strongly caution to not allow kids younger to see this. Even my 13 year old who actually likes scarier type stories was a bit disturbed at times. I found out that the director (Sam Raimi) is known for horror movies–so that seems to make sense (you can read the parent guide here).
2. Marry Me. Super Rockstar was out of town, so my evening television watching was left to things I know he’s not even remotely interested in. This movie has Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lopez–she plays a music super star (wow. big stretch for her) who is supposed to marry her music super star boyfriend live with them performing a song they co-wrote called “marry me”. She finds out right before their enormous live wedding that he has been unfaithful. So, in her stunned disbelief onstage, she randomly picks Owen Wilson’s character and asks him to marry her. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, he agrees and then the story goes exactly as you would expect it to. The two random strangers really do fall in love, blah, blah, blah. It was cute. That’s about all I have to say about it. It’s rated PG-13 (you can read the parent guide here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
