We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1.Ozark. Super Rockstar and I started watching this series over a year ago and then had to wait for this final season to come out. Can I just tell you something? I’m kind of relieved. It’s really good, but I have never felt so stressed out in watching a show. I won’t give any spoilers, but the whole series about a financial adviser who ends up stuck in a life of laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel. Through-out the series, he and his family go to extreme lengths to stay alive and get out of the cartel. There are 4 seasons total. It’s rated TV-MA and I don’t recommend for kids–it has a lot of violence, adult scenes, and a lot of foul language.
2.Vikings. We just finished season 4 of this series and both agreed that is as far as we will go. It’s been good-ish. Since it’s about Vikings–there’s a lot of battle and action scenes, but it also has an “artsy” flair that seemed over done at times. It focuses on a former farmer named Ragnar Lothbrok who is a fierce battler and fearless explorer. He leads their clan to England where they raid, pillage and plunder and encounter Christians for the first time. Every season they have killed off characters and after the end of this season–we just decided there wasn’t anyone left that we cared about, but there are 6 seasons total. It’s rated TV-MA, so most definitely not for kids.
3.Midway. Morgan suggested this for a movie night while Super Rockstar was playing a gig. He had seen it in school last year and really loved it–especially since he loves all things WWII. It is VERY good. It’s about a pivotal battle after Japan’s attack on the United States at Pearl Harbor and how some specific intelligence led to our victory. It is a really great story and has amazing battle scenes that aren’t too graphic. It’s rated PG-13–mostly for the violence and foul language (you can read the parent guide here).
4.Top Gun. With the new movie coming out, we of course had to watch the original. Plus, the boys had never seen it. I had forgotten how good it is–the dog fight battle scenes in F-14’s, all the great characters–especially Ice Man (Val Kilmer) and Maverick (Tom Cruise). It was great to see it after so many years. The boys loved it too…well, except for the love scenes between Maverick and Charlie (played by Kelly McGillis). It’s rated PG and other than some foul language and the intensity of the battles–it’s just fine for older kids. There is one love seen that suggests sex, but never shows any nudity (you can read the parent guide here.)
5. Top Gun: Maverick. It took over 30 years for them to make a sequel, but it was worth the wait. We LOVED it. It does start off a little slowly as they re-visit some of the original (for those that didn’t watch it the night before), but the story is great, the air battle scenes are amazing, and I felt like it was a great tie in to the first one. It’s rated PG-13–there are intense battles and foul language, but no nudity (you can read the parent guide here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
