We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. This was a very strange, yet oddly enjoyable movie. It has Nicolas Cage playing Nicolas Cage. He is hired to attend the birthday party of a super wealthy, somewhat dangerous super fan, Javi (Pedro Pascal). Nick finds out that Javi is being investigated by the CIA and they recruit him to search Javi’s house–because they believe he has kidnapped a young girl and is holding her somewhere in his home. He draws on former characters he has played (Con Air, The Rock, etc..) so that he feels equipped to help them. It has some good action and is pretty funny at times. It’s rated R, so I don’t recommend for kids.
2. The Man from Toronto. This was a very fun movie. It has Kevin Hart playing a man, Teddy, who is trying so hard to make it at something–and failing at just about everything. He decides to take his wife on a nice getaway to a cabin and inadvertently goes into the wrong cabin. He is mistaken for being an assassin known only as the Man from Toronto and is expected to torture a man to get information. He bumbles and fumbles his way through it and now is forced to play the part to stay alive. He encounters the real Man from Toronto (played by Woody Harrelson) who is after him now, but then they end up having to work together to overthrow a bigger scheme going on. It has so much great Kevin Hart/Woody Harrelson humor and good action. It’s rated PG-13 and that’s mostly for the foul language. There are also some torture scenes–nothing is really shown, but implied (you can read the parent guide here).
3. Dog. This was a neat story about a burned-out Army Ranger, Jackson (Channing Tatum). One of his fellow soldiers has died, leaving behind his dog–also an Army Ranger–Lulu (a Belgian Malinois). He is charged with driving Lulu across the country so she can attend her owner’s funeral. After which, she is to be destroyed because of her erratic behavior and training to be a deadly weapon–she had been injured in battle. It is a sweet story of how she and Jackson–both broken and battered by wars–find a way to get along and form a bond. There are some really sweet moments and the whole movie has a ‘feel good’ element to it. It’s rated PG-13. There’s a lot of foul language, some scenes where both Lulu and Jackson are dealing with PTSD, and a lot of drinking and prescription drug use (you can read the parent guide here).
4. Thor: Love and Thunder. I thought this was a really fun with great action Marvel movie. Thor has gotten himself back in shape and is called back to action to defeat Gorr (Christian Bale)–an evil being who is seeking to destroy all gods. Valkyrie, Korg and his ex-girlfriend-turned-female-Thor, Jane, all come together to take him down. I love that there is a lot of silliness and there are some good comic moments. Russel Crowe as Zeus is just fantastic. It’s rated PG-13. There’s some foul language, some references to orgy’s (Zeus), and Thor’s bare backside is shown. Gorr is a little scary at times and there is some violence and intense action. Also, there are some LGBTQ references–Valkyrie makes mention of having had a girlfriend and Korg mentions his two Dads and then has a partner (Dwayne) that’s mentioned at the end of the movie (you can read the parent guide here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
