We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1.Murder on the Orient Express. Super Rockstar and I saw this when it came out in 2017, but my boys –who have also developed a love of murder mysteries (yes!)–asked to watch it as a family movie. How could we refuse? It’s based on the famous Agatha Christi novel with my favorite of her crime solving sleuths–Hercule Poirot. I just LOVE Kenneth Branagh playing the role of Poirot–he does it brilliantly. There are so many other great actors in it–and if you’re not familiar with the story, the twist ending is fantastic! It’s rated PG-13 (you can read the parent guide here).
2.The Expanse. This is a show Super Rockstar and I found on Amazon Prime. It first aired in 2015 and there are 6 seasons to enjoy. We love it. If you know Super Rockstar at all–he is always looking for a good show or movie about outer space. The story line is a futuristic 24th century in which Mars and the asteroid belt have been colonized. There is constant friction and threat of war between the Martians, Belters and Earthers. It has a lot of B-list actors, but most are pretty good. They obviously spent a lot of money on CGI and the story is so intriguing. We just finished season 2 and are hooked. It’s rated TV-14, but I won’t let our boys watch it–there’s a lot of adult type situations and some brief nudity here and there. And as with all–mostly for adults shows–there is a lot of foul language (you can read the parent guide here).
3. The Bad Batch. Both of my boys are absolutely hooked on anything Star Wars related. Disney + has a animated show called The Clone Wars–and they have watched every episode at least twice. The Bad Batch is a spin off show that they talk about constantly, so we decided to watch it with them. It’s about a group of clone troupers that have some anomalies and nonconformities–therefore they are a “bad batch”. There is a fearless leader, a sniper, a wrecking ball sort of character, and a tech genius. I have to admit I’m really enjoying watching their missions and adventures. It’s rated TV-PG. If you have kids into Star Wars shows–they will love it.
4. Death on the Nile. This is the second movie based on one of Agatha Christi’s famous novels–and has Hercule Poirot as the crime solver. I have to admit that when I saw this in the theater last year, I didn’t like it as much as the Murder on the Orient Express movie. But, in watching it a second time–I absolutely loved it. Gal Gadot plays, a rich heiress on her honeymoon in Egypt where she and her new husband charter a boat for their wedding party–in which Hercule Poirot is a part– for a trip down the Nile. Many murders occur on the boat and Poirot must solve the crime. There’s a lot of really good twists and turns. Our boys loved it. It’s rated PG-13. There are some “dirty dancing” scenes at the beginning of the movie, but nothing is shown (you can read the parent guide here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
