We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The boys have been wanting to see this movie since it came out. It’s still in theaters, but we decided to just pay the extra and buy it on Amazon Prime (much cheaper than a night out at the movies). Puss in Boots is down to the last of his 9 lives and has escaped all those searching for him to live with Mama Luna–a local “cat lady” who has A LOT of cats. But he finds out that there’s a map to a place where you can have a ‘last wish’–where he hopes he can wish for and restore his 9 lives. He must compete with Goldilocks and the 3 bears (they’re kind of gangster), and Little Jack Horner (who is a psychopath) to get there first and obtain the wish. We loved it–great story, fun adventure and awesome humor. It’s rated PG, but I caution for littles. There’s a Big Bad Wolf character that’s kind of scary and I was surprised at how many curse words were hinted at and even used throughout the movie (you can read the parent guide here).
2. Beast. Imagine if Freddie Kruger or Jason or Michael Myers was a giant lion that attacks and kills people. That’s what this movie is. Idris Elba plays a dad who is taking his daughters to visit where their mother (she has passed away) grew up in Africa. A rogue lion is attacking and killing villagers throughout and he and his daughters become trapped out in the savannah. They have to survive multiple attacks by the giant man-eating lion that is now stalking them. I was squeezing Super Rockstar’s hand through the whole movie and felt so much relief when it was over. Apparently, the lion was killed at the end. But was he? They never showed his dead body. It’s rated R–so not for kids. Even as an adult–I’m not sure it was for me.
3. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. I’ll be honest–after seeing the movie trailer for this–I wasn’t very excited to see it. It looked kind of “meh” to me. Boy was I wrong. I’m so glad we saw it in the theater. It is just fantastic! Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) was not completely forthcoming about her experience living 30 years in the Quantum Realm. When she, Dr. Hank Pim, Hope Van Dyne (the Wasp), Scott Lang (Ant-Man), and his daughter, Cassie get pulled back down into the Quantum Realm–they quickly learn that there is a major threat. Kang the Conqueror has been banished there and is trying to break free–using them as his way out. It is a great action movie with so many comedic moments too. I won’t spoil it–just trust me. It’s good. It’s rated PG-13–there’s really not much in the way of adult situations other than some humor and innuendo. And there’s a handful of curse words throughout (you can read the parent guide here).
4. Enola Holmes. This is a Netflix original with Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) playing Sherlock Holmes younger sister, Enola. Super Rockstar and I had seen it a while ago and since my boys have developed a love of mysteries, they had asked to see it too. It is such a fun movie. Henry Cavill (Superman) plays Sherlock and he and his brother Mycroft must come to their teenage sister’s aide when their mother (played by Helena Bonham Carter) goes missing. Along the way of searching for her (and Mycroft trying to get Enola into a finishing school–which she absolutely refuses to do), Enola and Sherlock stumble upon another mystery involving a young lord and end up working together to solve the crime. My boys loved it and we enjoyed seeing it again. It’s rated PG-13. It’s a very clean movie in that there are no adult type situations (just some innocent teenage attraction between Enola and the young Lord Tewkesberry) (of course this sent my boys into screeching fits) and hardly any curse words (you can read the parent guide here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
