We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1. What About Bob. This is such a great classic from 1991. Our boys are big Bill Murray fans (they LOVE the Ghostbuster movies) and we had been telling them they absolutely needed to see this movie. It’s about a man named Bob with multiple mental issues/disorders/phobias and is paired with a new psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) who is going on vacation for a month. Bob freaks out and goes to great lengths to find out where Dr. Marvin is. Once he finds him, he attaches himself to the family–who all think he is so sweet and kind. But Dr. Marvin becomes obsessed with trying to get rid of Bob–and goes to great lenghts to do so. It’s really funny and cringy and the boys loved it. It’s rated PG. There are a few curse words and crude language (you can read the parent guide here).
2. 65. This is a new one in theaters staring Adam Driver (Star Wars –Kilo Ren). He is an astronaut who crash lands on earth–only it’s earth during the dinosaur age. He and a young girl are the only survivors of the crash and must make their way across a dangerous wilderness full of deadly dinosaurs to the part of the ship that has the escape pod. Overall, I thought it was pretty good. The boy’s assessment was that it was boring. I was surprised that they said that because there are several scenes where the characters are being chased and almost eaten by dinosaurs. I think what they meant is that there were a lot of boring parts. It’s true. There are only two human actors–the astronaut and the little girl–and she doesn’t speak his language. So, there’s not a lot of dialogue and there’s probably too much drama and dead spaces with too little action for what we thought the movie was going to be. It’s rated PG-13 –for some mild curse words and the scary dinosaur attacks (you can read the parent guide here).
3. Die Hart. This is an Amazon Prime original starring Kevin Hart playing himself as a type-cast comedy actor who really wants to be seen as an action hero. He finds out that a super famous director is interested in him as an action star but wants to send him to action training school first. John Travolta plays, Ron Wilcox–an eccentric, kind of on the edge of crazy, acting coach out in the middle of know where in the mountains. It’s pretty funny and we enjoyed it. I noticed that the Imdb.com website classifies it as a TV show with several episodes– I guess that’s how it originally aired on Prime. It’s rated TV-MA. But, just so you know, if you go to watch it on Amazon Prime–it’s a movie rated 16+. Being a Kevin Hart movie there’s a lot of foul language (you can read the parent guide here).
4. Oblivion. This is a movie from 2012 starring Tom Cruise. It kept coming up as a possibility for us to watch as a family movie, but we always rejected because Super Rockstar and I had thought we had seen it before and found it boring. We finally showed the trailer to the boys to see if they were interested and I realized I have never seen it and it looked really good. It was. It’s about a man and woman who are assigned to work on earth in a future where aliens have attacked and we were forced to use all our nukes to destroy them. Earth is now uninhabitable and most of the humans have moved to Titan–a moon of Saturn. They alone are patrolling the earth along with drones to finish eliminating any of the “Scavs” (the aliens) left behind. Only they discover–that’s not exactly what’s going on. We loved it. Super Rockstar had seen it before but forgotten most of the story and is not sure why he would have thought it was boring. It’s rated PG-13 for some cursing and there is a scene where there’s some brief nudity shown (you can read the parent guide here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
