We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1. Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania. This was a family movie choice made by one of our boys. We’ve watched all the movies in this series and this one has the same silly, slap stick goofiness of all the rest. Van Helsing has a “Monsterfication Ray” that turns Johnny into a monster and all the others into humans. When it accidentally breaks, it is a race against time to find a particular crystal that can only be found halfway around the world so that the changes don’t become permanent. Overall, it was entertaining–Frankenstein as a human was by far the best–it just got kind of tiresome with some of the same gags over and over. It’s rated PG (you can read the parent guide here).
2. The Highwaymen. Super Rockstar and I really enjoyed this one. It’s based on a true story with Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson playing Texas Rangers who are brought in to bring down the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. It’s really good. I never knew there was such a celebrity frenzy surrounding Bonnie and Clyde–especially considering how violent and ruthless they were. It’s rated R.
3. The Night Agent. This is a really good new show to stream on Netflix. It’s about a disgraced FBI agent who has to work the nightshift babysitting a phone in the White House that never rings…that is, until one night it does. From then on it is a high action, intense drama as he seeks to protect a woman on the run from the assassins that killed her aunt and uncle, while trying to clear his own name when he is framed for the crimes. There’s 10 episodes total and is rated TV-MA.
4. Fast X. You don’t watch the Fast and the Furious movies for their superb acting and good story lines–but the action is always fantastic. That’s why it’s good to pay full price and see them on the big screen. The stunts are over the top–putting 007/James Bond ridiculousness to shame, there are too many car explosions and building collapses to keep track of, and this just might be the best acting roll I’ve ever seen Jason Momoa play. The plot of the movie is about the same as the others: a bad guy (Jason Momoa in this one) must be taken down, the bad guy is trying to hurt all that Dom loves–his ever-important family, and he and his crew must band together to drive fast, pull off impossible stunts and save the day (all while flexing muscles 24/7).
Both of my boys were not as impressed with this one as they were with previous ones–their favorite is the Hobbs and Shaw spin off movie. They thought the whole–“Family, family, family” mantra was a little too overdone. Super Rockstar and I both loved the fun action and Jason Momoa’s character. There were a lot of references to past characters that I don’t remember, and I felt a little lost at times. It ended with a cliffhanger–so there is definitely more high driving (eh see what I did there) action to come. It’s rated PG-13. We have only let the boys see a couple of the Fast and the Furious movies mostly because of excessive booty shaking by scantily clad women. This one has a brief (eh?) scene that made them both feel pretty cringy, there is some foul language here and there–but pretty mild overall, and there’s a couple of scenes (mostly with Momoa’s character–he’s pretty psycho) that could be a little disturbing (you can read the parent guide here).
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
