We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1.The Meg. With the new one coming out–of course we had to re-watch the first one. We were able to catch a TV version (where they edit out the worst parts) while we were at a hotel last week. It’s about some scientists exploring the deepest known trench in the ocean and find a barrier that has hidden a lost world of marine life species including a Megalodon–an enormous shark thought to be extinct. It gets a bit bloody after that and I had forgotten how intense it is. Grayson loved it and is ready to see the second one. Morgan says he’s got issues with any underwater death scenes and isn’t all that anxious to see the second one. It’s rated PG-13–the intense action, violence and gore are about the same level as the Jurassic World movies (you can read the parent guide here).
2. Mortal Kombat. This was another one we caught on TV while staying at a hotel. It’s based on the popular video game where a MMA fighter encounters warriors from the outworld who have superpowers and superstrength. He discovers he’s been chosen along with several other earth realm warriors to compete in a high stakes battle for the universe. I fell asleep about halfway through. Super Rockstar and the boys stayed up and watched til the end. When I asked them if it was good, they all responded with a “meh”. It’s rated R and normally I wouldn’t have let my boys watch it–but since it was a TV version–all the R rated content was edited out. There’s no nudity or sex scenes, but there’s quite a bit of violence, gore and intense actions. I don’t think I would have let them see the unedited version (you can read the parent guide here).
3. Special Ops: Lioness. This is a new show streaming on Paramount +. It is another one written, directed and produced by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and stars Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman. It’s about a CIA spy, Joe (Zoe) that leads the Lioness team–a group of special forces that take out terror organizations. A woman member is placed undercover to befriend a female family member of the target–thus the reason for the name, “lioness”. There is also a lot of focus on Joe’s family life as she attempts to balance being a wife and mother with the dangers of her job that take her all around the world. We really like it a lot. In fact, the only criticism we have is with the streaming service itself. This particular show is on Paramount + and is free to watch with commercials. For some reason there is a glitch about halfway through the commercial breaks and we have to restart to the previous point over and over and over–it only happens during this show. The only reason we put up with it, is because it really is that good. It’s rated TV-MA.
I would love to hear our opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
