We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1. Death and Other Details. This is a new show streaming on Hulu. It stars Mandy Patinkin playing a world-renowned detective, Rufus Cotesworth. He is on a fancy cruise and encounters a woman, Imogene, whose case he never solved when she was a child. A death on the ship has them both searching to find the murderer–believing that it is somehow related to her past. It’s really, really good–a lot like an Agatha Christi tale. There are only to be 4 episodes–each about an hour. We have watched three and can’t wait to see how it ends. It’s rated TV-MA–there is a lot of adult content and a homosexual relationship.
2. Barbie. While my boys and Super Rockstar were out stalking Elk on a hunting trip, I decided to finally watch the Barbie movie. I’m sorry to say–I was sadly and overwhelmingly disappointed. I love being a woman and I am certainly for equality, but when we are sending messages to girls that “girl power” is all about belittling and emasculating men–that’s not right. That was pretty much the overlying theme of this movie. But that’s not all that made it terrible–it was a weak story and poor acting. The only part I liked was how they made the whole “Barbie World” come to life. I loved playing with Barbie as a young girl and I thought the sets were really good. I also enjoyed the funny narration, and I thought Ryan Gossling did a good job as Ken. To be honest, I was ready to stop watching after about 5 minutes, but since I had spent $6.00 to rent it–I felt I had to see it through. I’m just glad I didn’t spend full price. It’s rated PG-13. There’s not much foul language, no nudity–just some inuendo at times, and there’s a trans actor playing one of the Barbie’s (you can read the parent guide here).
3. The Maze Runner Movies. Since I was so disappointed with the Barbie movie–I had to find a way to wash it out of my brain, so I ended up watching the 3 Maze Runner movies (The Maze Runner, Scorch Trials, and Death Trials). I really enjoyed them all–but they are rather intense with Grievers (giant spider monsters) and Cranks (zombified humans). They’re all rated PG-13.
I would love to hear your opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
