We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I hope it will give you good insight and even some ideas if you’re stuck finding something new.
1.Godzilla Minus One. Super Rockstar is a huge Godzilla fan and really wanted to catch this in the theater. I was pretty skeptical. It’s in Japanese with English subtitles–with producers, directors and actors you’ve never heard of. WWII has just ended and a kamikaze pilot fakes engine trouble rather than completing his mission. He lands on nearby island where mechanics check over his plane and find it fine. It’s at this moment that Godzilla makes his entrance–only the shamed pilot and one of the mechanics survive. Meanwhile his home has been wiped out and ravaged by war. He is given a second chance at life and employed sweeping for mines in the sea. Godzilla is back and is on course to further obliterate his city. He and several others bravely take on fighting the monster and sending him to the bottom of the sea. Or did they? It was a very disjointed at times story, with a lot of emotion that didn’t make sense and some pretty terrible acting. I thought the CGI for Godzilla was pretty good. I didn’t really understand what the “minus one” part of the title meant. I read that it has to do with the fact that Japan was at “zero” at the end of the war and Godzilla’s attack lowered them to minus one. Still not sure I understand, but ok. It’s rated PG-13 (you can read the parent guide here).
2. The rest of the Hunger Games movies. Over the past few weeks, we’ve watched the rest of the Hunger Games (Catching Fire, Mocking Jay: Part One and Part 2) with Grayson. He (and we) really enjoyed all of them. They’re all rated PG-13. The first two involve kids killing kids (it’s what the games are about), there are some scary wolf -like creatures, and in the last one are what they call MUTT’s–zombie like monsters with no eyes and lots of teeth. They’re all pretty intense at times.
3. Indianna Jones: Dial of Destiny. The boys chose this one to watch and Super Rockstar and I joined them. I had really liked it in the theater and really enjoyed seeing it again (you can read my first review here).
4. Cosmic Sin. Super Rockstar is always in search of a good outer space movie. I’m sad to say–this wasn’t it. It has Bruce Willis and so it seemed promising. But it was just weird, a hard to follow story, terrible acting and it almost seemed like a highschooler wrote it–not exaggerating. I’m still not sure what was going on. It’s an hour and half movie and we called it quits after about 45 minutes. I felt like that was very generous of us. It’s rated R.
I would love to hear your opinions and any suggestions you may have of what to watch.
