We are a family that loves movies and TV shows. Each week I’ll share what we watched and what we thought about them. I use an emoji system to let you know our individual opinions–: Loved it, : it was ok (or meh), and : didn’t like it (or disappointed). There are links to IMdb.com where you can find descriptions, trailers, and all the information you need about the movie. I also include links to their parent guide for what we watch with our children (PG-13 and above). Pluggedin.com is also a great resource to learn more about the content of movies, tv shows, games, books, and YouTube channel.
1.The Beekeeper. I love Jason Statham movies–they’re always great action films. I’ve noticed there is a bit of a formula to all the movies he does. It goes something like this: He plays a retired/former special forces operative of some kind, someone close to him gets killed or kidnapped, and he must therefore come out of retirement and defeat the assailants–often with a high body count and without a shirt on. Because the formula is so successful for him–this particular one made me wonder if the producers and writers of movies he stars in have just started throwing ideas into a hat, drawing one out and throwing together a movie about it. In this one he’s an actual beekeeper but is retired from a special force unit known as the “beekeepers”. It gets much, much hokier –if you can believe it. This one was not a favorite of ours, but I’d give it a solid “meh”. It’s rated R.

I love all of these movies and will always love them. We enjoyed watching all of them in order and yes, I cried during the one where Andy is going off to college. My son Morgan is starting his senior year in high school, and this hits a bit too close to home.

3. Outer Range: Season 2. This is such a bizarre TV series. We watched the first season and were intrigued but thoroughly confused most of the time. This season is no different. We actually had to re-watch the first season again just to remember what we felt confused about before. There’s a lot of timeline stuff–so you have to pay attention and not let your mind drift while watching. I think I want to like it more than I actually do, but it’s just interesting enough to keep me watching. It’s Rated TV-MA

4. Mechanic Resurrection. Another Jason Statham. Another formula. In this one he’s a former hitman, a girl he falls in love with is kidnapped, and has to jump through some hoops to rescue her. It’s also a solid “meh” for both of us. It’s rated R.

5. Boneyard. This movie has Mel Gibson in it and that’s the reason we decided to watch it. It also has 50 cent playing a role, but we didn’t recognize the name of the director or any of the other actors. It was terrible. Just terrible. It was one that we should have quite after about 15 minutes but kept at it because we thought “surely it must get better”. It didn’t and the ending leaves you more disappointed than the entire disappointing movie. Our new rule is that we must recognize at least 3 or more of the actors involved before trying something we’ve never heard of. And if we don’t like it in 15 minutes, we won’t torture ourselves hoping it will get better. It’s rated R.

6. Hunter Killer. This is a really good action/thriller starring Gerard Butler. He plays an American Submarine captain who teams up with a team of Navy Seals to rescue the Russian president. It’s a good story and has great action. Just Super Rockstar and I watched it. It’s rated R, but I would be ok if our boys watched it–the violence is pretty intense, but the rest is not too adult for them, and I think they would really enjoy it too.
