It’s Fall Break week in the Glenn household and we are having the time of our lives! A couple of years ago I wrote a blog post about my boy’s school having a Fall Break (you can read it here). To say I was not a big fan of this break was a vast understatement. But, today I feel a lot differently–I’ve really enjoyed having my boys home with me.
AND Super Rockstar was able to take a long weekend with us leading up to the break–which was great! We have mostly just enjoyed hanging out around our home–which for Super Rockstar is a rare treat, but, we also enjoyed doing a few fun family things.
However, I’ve been at this Momma thing long enough to know that boredom can sweep in like a storm. So, even though our finances are a little tight right now–we were able to pull off a very fun, relaxing and much needed break. Here’s some inexpensive (and even free) things we found to do:
1. Swimming.
We have a YMCA membership and got to enjoy going swimming. Our boys love the water–so this is always a big time treat. Cost: Free (membership is already paid for)
2. Focus on the Family.
They have a GREAT free kids play area in their visitor center. We’ve been going there since they were itty bitty, and I was a little worried that maybe they had outgrown the joy of playing there. But, they had a blast–playing in the the airplane, going through the secret passage, watching the Veggie Tales videos, going through the Narnia wardrobe, and of course– the 2 story slide. I think they must have gone down it 20 times. Cost: Free
3. McDonald’s.
I don’t know about your kids, but mine have always loved McDonald’s. I am beginning to enjoy them more now that they have upgraded most restaurants to the McCafe’s. The one we went to was newly remodeled and the play room was AWESOME! It had a great climbing, obstacle course thingy, a table with computer games, AND the best part was our table. It was electronic and had these bright colored dots all over it that changed colors when you touched them. I had trouble getting them to focus on eating, but it made an ordinary every day thing–a lot more fun. Chik Fil A’s are fun too but, they are a little pricier (probably because their food is healthier). For some reason my youngest doesn’t like their food (we are considering sending him to therapy). Cost: $15
4. Going to Daddy’s Office.
If your spouse works away from home getting to go to their office can be a fun adventure. My boys decided to wear costumes–not necessarily Halloween costumes–this is just how they roll when they’re on break. But, while we were there, Super Rockstar’s boss and one other co-worker gave them candy. I can see how this might become a pattern. Cost: Free
5. Dart Warz.
If your kids(or you) are into Nerf gun battles–this place is high heaven. For a solid hour (or more) you get to have Nerf gun battles against other kids and adults. They assign you to one of two teams and have a DJ who directs different games like capture the flag or just battling it out against the other team. You can bring your own weapons or rent one of theirs, but they supply oodles of ammunition. Cost: $15 (Every Thursday is a discount day)
6. The Summit.
Our final frontier was the Summit. This is one of those bowling/video game/laser tag type places. They were offering a half price deal for games and laser tag and it usually provides a good solid hours worth of entertainment (unless your like my son Grayson and blow all your money on the claw type games in 30 seconds flat, then cry because brother still has most of his money and he’s SO bored now). Cost $20
Fifty dollars and change for a week’s worth of entertainment isn’t too shabby. All the in between times were spent playing outside, playing with toys, building Lego’s (Morgan), drawing a gazillion pictures (Grayson), building a tent, watching movies (inside the tent) and playing a few video games. My favorite part has been that–other than the handful of activities that we left the house for–I haven’t had to do much directing. My boy’s love playing together. Yes, fights and skirmishes happen here and there, but for the most part I feel like they have had a good refreshing break and hopefully are ready to get back to it come Monday.
