July was a little quieter than normal for us in the movie and show watching department. We did quite a bit of travel and since the boys have phones to stare at now–they did a lot of YouTube video watching instead of movie watching. But we of course still had a sizeable list. Here’s all we watched.
Movies:
1. Nobody 2. We loved the first one so much, of course we had to see the sequel. It’s every bit as good–if not better. He takes his family to on a vacation to a theme park that he went to as a child–only to find out there is corruption everywhere. His dad and his brother come to the rescue and it becomes a whole family affair of taking down the bad guys. Lots of good action, but also a lot of graphic violence. It’s rated R.
2. Greyhound. Grayson got to see this movie last year in his history class and always told us how good it was. He wasn’t joking. It is a really good WWII movie staring Tom Hanks as a Navy commander who has been assigned to escort cargo ships across a dangerous area of the ocean that is stalked by the feared German U-boats. The action is intense throughout and it’s so, so very good. It’s rated PG-13.
3. The Sheep Detectives. I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. We had deemed it a rental, but it took a really long time for it make its way to Prime. It’s about a shepherd who reads murder mysteries to his sheep each night. When he is murdered, the sheep take it upon themselves to solve the crime. It stars Hugh Jackman as the shepherd, and it is a really fun lighthearted movie. It’s rated PG.
4. In the Grey. This was a really good action movie starring Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal. They are part of a team of professional thieves and are hired to steal back a fortune that was stolen from a billionaire. There’s a lot of fun action and drama throughout the movie. It’s rated R.
5. The Backrooms. I told you I would not see this movie. I had no plans to see this movie, but then….I saw this movie. In my attempts to somehow connect with my teenage boys–I sometimes have to dive into their worlds that I don’t understand. I don’t like horror/creepy movies, but they do. What I can say it that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. There’s a huge creepy factor to it, but overall, it’s just a story about a guy living a boring life who finds a world he didn’t know exists (the backrooms), becomes addicted to exploring and visiting it–only to find out it is occupied with very unfriendly “entities”. It’s rated R.
6. The Odyssey. Super Rockstar and I decided we wanted to see this in the theater. There was so much hype, and I wanted to see if the movie measured up to all the excitement. In my humble opinion–it did not. I thought it was…OK. Just ok. I really wanted to like it more and get caught up in it–the way a big movie like that is supposed to make you feel. It just fell kind of flat. Is it worth seeing? I think so. I just would argue that it’s not “masterful” or “epic” the way they made it out to be. It’s rated R.
7. Normal. Bob Odenkirk seems to enjoy playing the role of an unassuming guy that no one notices. In this one he plays an interim sheriff in a small own where he learns the hard way that the whole town is involved with a drug cartel. He takes on all the bad guys and saves the day. It’s really good, but it also is a lot of gory fight scenes. It’s rated R.
TV Shows.
1. For All Mankind: Season 4. I told you I wasn’t sure if we would continue to watch this series or not. But dang it. It’s a really good story and we just had to see the next season. This one is all about Mars and a new found asteroid with promising valuable minerals to mine. It’s rated TV-MA.
I can’t believe summer movie season is winding down. There are so many good ones coming soon (including the biggest blockbuster of the summer–at least for our family). Can’t wait to tell you all about it next time.
